It is hard to believe how time passes by so fast. If you’re my age as well, then it has been 10 years since you were 13 and you were probably in 8th grade. Doesn’t sound like a big deal until you really start to think about what you were up to 10 years ago. So much has changed in the world in the last decade that for a second it’s hard to believe that it’s been only 10 years since all of this. Here’s a bit of a recap.
Ten years ago today, we were all using flip-phones! The little things on which you had to hit a key thrice to get to the third letter and squeeze your messages to fit 160 characters.
So much of our time was spent on punching in the tune to a song to set as our ringtone, only to realize after we were done that note was off, and then starting over! Your abused 3-year-old smartphone suddenly feels like a blessing now, right?
Dial Up Modems
bip bip bip bip boop boop bip bip bip. bleeeeep BLOOOOOp beeDOONG! beeDOONG! KsssshhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Sounds all too familiar no?
Calling on Landlines
There was nothing like the fear of having multiple connected land-lines in the house, and finding out your parents were listening to your conversations! Also, the number of times we hung up before our significant other’s parent picked up the phone is probably also 2006!
Buying CDs and DVDs
Begging your parents to go the video store so you could have something new to watch over the weekend felt like a Friday ritual. On the other hand, not having the latest album that everyone was grooving to at the lunch table was also something we’ve endured.
Whether you were on MSN or a different messenger, there was no cooler feeling than switching on your PC and finding your friends online. The same friends you saw earlier today in school, yes.
Life before Facebook & Google
Didn’t those conversations have a different feel to them entirely? Like not remembering something, and spending an hour or so cracking it together. High-fiving everyone the moment someone could recollect it, oh the nostalgia. Google, you’ve stolen that away from us.
Sending a Fax
Those highly frustrating things! Need I say more?
Trips without a GPS
Watching your parents take you on a trip out of town, and leave an entire 3 hours early incase you guys got lost. Yep, happened every single time. Definitely one we don’t miss!
If the things above didn’t, here are a couple of things that’ll definitely make you feel old: It has been 10 years since Ice age 2, the first Night at The Museum and the first Cars movie came out. It has been a decade since James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful topped the charts. It’s also been a decade since you were grooving to the tunes of Justin Timberlake’s I’m bringing Sexy Back and Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie. Feel old now?
Don’t all of these little things seem like way more than a decade ago? The world and technology has progressed so fast in the last 10 years, we often forget to be grateful for how much easier life is. From saving menu cards to call the restaurant and order food, to driving by the theater to check which movies were playing, life wasn’t so easy, was it? Whereas, now we have things at the tip of our fingers. No wonder they say, Roti, Kapda, Makaan, (food, clothing, housing) has become Zomato, Flipkart, and Housing today!
