This world’s a beautiful place. Happier than the heavens, but sadly darker than hell too. How wonderful would it be to be a mother to a daughter. But I won’t be able to see her live like I do. Perpetual fear of being molested, raped and my body being used as an object against my will. She would be happy in my womb rather.
As is said always, India is a land of Goddesses. Sadly, those Goddesses aren’t powerful enough to prevent crimes against women. How does speaking about woman empowerment and crimes against women help? Does it even do anything? Do people even read such articles and stories anymore. Writing about crime against women has become a fad these days. It doesn’t matter whether you are a wife beater or a daughter killer. On social networking websites, everybody is a feminist. Am I writing this because I like to follow trends. Because if I write about sati Pratha, nobody will even bother to open my article. No. I’m writing this, because I want my daughter to grow up in a safer, more beautiful India.
They say, you might as well leave India and settle abroad, in a country that’s safer and more beautiful. Maybe, I can. But what about the crores of mothers who have no option of even shifting to a safer city within India. Moreover, this is my homeland. I grew up here. I don’t want to settle abroad. I want to live just here. Why should I move out. Those who cannot respect women might as well move.
I want an India, where my daughter can go out on the streets without the apprehension of being ogled at. I want an India, where my daughter can come home late in the night, without the fear of being kidnapped and raped. I want an India, where my daughter can travel in public transport without the pain of being harassed and molested. I want an India, where my daughter can LIVE and not just breathe. I want an India that can be a home to my daughter and not a cage.
Because, if they are to respect a daughter never, I’d rather carry mine in my womb forever.
