Parents looking for inspiration for baby names have turned to television series. It’s a trend that’s been gathering ace over the past few years as they name their little ones after their favourite TV characters. While some parents look for names further back in time, some prefer the cooler, younger names.
1. Game of Thrones
Khaleesi, Sansa and Arya have become popular baby girl names after the strong female characters played in the favourite TV show Game of Thrones. The show is gaining popularity and fans with each season as more baby boys Theon and Tyrion are being welcomed into the world.
Arya, however has been a popular Indian name for both boys and girls since the late 90s.
2. Downton Abbey
There is believed to be a resurgence in popularity for Edwardian names which were popular in the 1904. Cora, Rose, Violet among other vintage names from Downton Abbey are now back in vogue. Names which were among the top 30 names in the early 1900s are back thanks to the famous Downton Abbey.
It’s easy to know a Friends fanatic parent if you come across a young Chandler or Phoebe. One of television’s most loved sitcoms from the 90s, Friends made these unique names sound cool and trendy. While the other ‘friends’ have more common names, we’re not sure of how many parents would lean towards Gunther.
4. How I met Your Mother
The hit TV Series How I Met Your Mother ran for a good 9 seasons and undeniably one of the best characters of the show was Barney. This quirky, cool name has become popular among a lot of parents, although I’m not sure how many mothers would want their son’s to grow up to be the next Barney Stinson.
5.Sex and the City
We bet there were so many pregnant women binge watching Sex and the City during their pregnancy that they were bound to name their baby girls after their favourite characters Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha or Miranda.
6. Grey’s Anatomy
Derek and Meredith, the Grey’s Anatomy duo are one of television’s favourite characters. These names have been plucked from the show more than just a few times. We hope these baby Derek’s grow up to be as dreamy as Derek Shepherd.
7. Keeping up with the Kardashians
Love it or hate it but you can’t ignore it. Whether or not you’re a fan of the show you pretty much always know what the K- Sisters are up to. Of all names in the K- Clan, Khloe has resonated most with to-be-parents.
While many loved to hate Skyler White, some really admired the strength and conviction of her character. This explains why this name Skyler has become so popular in the past few years.
Both the name and character Zander Smith, the bad boy with a sensitive side on the daytime soap opera General Hospital has struck a chord with viewers, several of whom have named their sons Zander. It sounds different and has a nice ring to it.
10. Desperate Housewives
11. Modern Family
Luke and Cameron are the two most popular baby boy names inspired by the family-drama sitcom Modern Family. While Lily, a beautiful flower and a delicate name is gaining acceptance for baby girls.
Would you consider naming your son or daughter after your favourite TV character? Whatever your TV viewing tastes, keep your ears open for some name-dropping as your little one percolates.
